From the hardscrabble coal fields of West Virginia to the borderlands of Arizona to the snow swept plains of Standing Rock, This Short Life collects the oral testimonies of twelve ordinary Americans fighting to make America a better country during the height of the Trump era. Their personal struggles and their dreams of a different society are accompanied by Andrew Lichtenstein’s photographs, documenting a nation at a crossroads. The words and presence of these men and women offer hope for a better future in spite of the daily headlines.

Jet Age Books is proud to announce our pre-sale of Andrew Lichtenstein’s newest book, This Short Life! It’s about to be printed in Lithuania and we expect to deliver copies to your mailbox in February – March 2024!

“The stories told in this book, the interviews, have everything to do with Donald Trump, and, of course, absolutely nothing to do with him. Within the deep polarization of the American political landscape, I wanted to search for Americans who were actively engaged in building a more open, inclusive, and equal nation. something they had been engaged with long before Trump’s election, and would be engaged in long after his departure.” — Andrew Lichtenstein

“…other kinds of genuine wealth emanate from Andrew’s collaborators, in both their images and their distinctive voices. A wealth of determination. A wealth of resilience. A wealth of joy in community and shared struggle. A wealth of dreams for a better world that they can help bring into being. Andrew’s photographs ultimately capture—expose—the sheer generosity of spirit exemplified by those who shared their stories and their lives with him.” — Alex Lichtenstein
